A 51-year-old father of three was on Wednesday remanded to prison after he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to answer the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
The particulars of the offence stated that on November 10 at Georgetown, the accused Leslie Subryan had 24 grammes of cannabis in his possession. The defendant who was represented by attorney-at-law Ronald Burch-Smith pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The attorney related to the court that his client had been kept over 72 hours in custody and on the day in question the defendant was some distance away from where the substance was found.
According to the facts presented by Prosecutor Lionel Harvey, on the day in question a police patrol was in the Stabroek Market area when they observed the defendant and conducted a search on his person.
As a result, he was found with a bag that contained leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis. The accused was cautioned and taken to the police station and charged for the offence.
The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that no special circumstance was presented to the court and the matter was adjourned until January 9.
