Nothing sinister about support to police – private sector

Amid concerns about what help it will be providing to the police on polling day, the Private Sector Commission tonight said that there was nothing sinister about its role and it will be offering logistical support where necessary.

In a statement, the private sector said that it “wishes to clarify what was meant in our public statement with respect to assistance to the police.  Our intention is to provide logistical support where necessary and, to this end, some companies will be providing vehicles to the police for this purpose.

“We will also be sharing information with the police as we have been and will be sharing information with all the political parties, with the Electoral Assistance Bureau, with GECOM and with the international observers.  We are accredited local observers and have met with all the local and international observer groups, including the Caricom observers, the OAS team and the Commonwealth observers.

“We would like to assure the public that there is nothing sinister about our involvement in these elections.  We wish to note that we are employers of over 120,000 people and we do have a legitimate interest in peaceful and fair elections and in contributing to the smooth transition to the new government”.
