Why is the Guyana Police Force failing to deal with the criminal gang in Laing Avenue?

Dear Editor,

For over a year now the Guyana Police Force has unashamedly ignored the residents of Laing Avenue who continue to live at the mercy of a bicycle, gun-slinging gang in one section of the area.

This is even after your newspaper highlighted our plight last week; protection it would appear has become a selective responsibility within the force. The ‘thieving bridge’ as publicized in your news report is still a haven for the crime-loving gang.

It seems logical to conclude that the force is waiting on a real tragedy to befall us before they act; perhaps the image of the body of a resident lying at that bridge fatally wounded at the hands of that gang will trigger them into a response.

My family and my neighbours have suffered at the hands of these criminals, and I shudder to think that I could be next. The recent attack was on Sunday night, and as I hurriedly put this letter together I can hear my neighbour’s daughter venting her frustrations.

To the Commissioner of Police I ask, why is Laing Avenue being neglected and to what end?  The force owes the residents of Laing Avenue an apology for treating us shabbily, and they also owe us security because we’re citizens too.

Yours faithfully,
D Gritten
