GPHC does not charge a fee for cataract operations

Dear Editor,

Reference is being made to an article written by Mr. Shaun Michael Samaroo and published in the Monday, March 28, 2011 edition of your newspaper headlined `McNeil Powley longs for home’.  I first wish to commend the reporter for a well written article; however, I must outline a major flaw which I observed and thought would have lent to a better or more factual article.

In my view, more indepth investigative journalism would have led the reporter to understand or realize that the hospital does not charge a fee for cataract operations, as was stated by Mr. Powley. What may have occurred (if Mr. Powley’s claim is factual) was the doctor, who was employed at GPHC, may have also had his/her private clinic and he/she may have offered a quotation for that private service.

I am very concerned and continue to request that reporters seek to verify stories that are relevant to the hospital before they take same to print.

Yours faithfully,
Michael H. Khan
