Georgetown needs a permanent City Management instead of the M&CC

Dear Editor,

Ever so often the services of the Georgetown City Council threaten to come to a halt with Central Government from time to time calling for an Interim Management Committee to take over from the council.

The Guyana Consumers Association had long been advocating that Georgetown be administered by a permanent City Management just as several successful American cities are.

The City Manager must be given full powers and his or her performance has to be evaluated every half-a-year. The remuneration of the City Manager has to be very attractive to attract and retain persons of the highest calibre. The details of his or her powers and programmes will have to be worked out before he or she assumes office.

The life of the present City Council will soon come to an end as the cycle of elections returns, but such elections could be suspended pending a final legal resolution of the status of the Mayor and City Council in relation to the establishment of a City Management System.

In the abolition or suspension of the City Council, some experienced and able officials/members such as Mr Robert Williams should be retained so that the baby is not emptied with the bath tub.

Yours faithfully,
Eileen R Cox
