City Council meeting stakeholders on arresting Georgetown decline

The Mayor and City Council is initiating plans to arrest the further decline of Georgetown, at a stakeholder meeting planned for today at the Pegasus Hotel.

In a press release, the City Council said it has been challenged to meet “the expanding needs of the city with a contracting revenue base. All of our revenue earning proposals have been put down by the powers that be.” However the meeting is expected to address this and to initiate plans to rescue the city, as it marks the 200th anniversary of the renaming of the capital Georgetown.

The meeting will appoint a broad-based committee to look at different activities and projects to mark the anniversary and revitalise local communities. It will also “Instruct the City Engineer to complete final estimates for the restoration of City Hall,” followed by the appointment of a steering committee to pursue the restoration.

The agenda also includes requesting that the Town Clerk ignite the street naming programme and inviting interested persons to submit suggestions to City Hall. The Solid Waste Management Director will also be asked to finalise plans for a massive clean-up exercise in all sections of the city.
