A sign of things to come?

Dear Editor,

For this upcoming general election four political public meetings have been held in the village of Success on the East Coast of Demerara, so far.

The first one was by the PPP/C then the AFC followed by APNU, with the final one to date by the PPP/C. The first one held by the PPP/C was rained out and so they returned Monday evening, but not surprisingly the turnout was very poor and disappointing for the local PPP/C organizers.

Success village was noted in its heyday of Cheddi and Janet as a stronghold of the ruling PPP, and even in the ’60s was known as ‘Little Havana.’ There were less than two dozen persons at the meeting despite loud public announcements being made three times during the recent weekends. The police and plain clothes security were in attendance and they outnumbered the locals.

Of those who attended the public meeting on Monday evening most present had been ‘bussed in‘ and the rest were old diehards.

Many wondered, including my neighbour, a sugar worker and an erstwhile PPP supporter, if this is a sign of things to come and change after November 29, or is it the sign of a South American Spring in Guyana which many others long for?

Yours faithfully,
