Guyanese man held in big Jamaica cocaine bust

A Guyanese man who attempted to leave Jamaica with cocaine valued at J$9.5 million is under investigation by detectives from the Trans National Crime and Narcotics Division, according to yesterday’s Jamaica Gleaner.

The Customs Department said the 24 pounds of cocaine was found in a video game belonging to the man, who was slated to board a flight at the Norman Manley Inter-national Airport on Monday.

Customs said the man was travelling on a Guyanese passport. The report said that  he initially cleared customs with a laptop bag and a suitcase and exited the baggage hall.

However, the Customs department said the man later returned to the baggage hall claiming that he had left a third bag. The bag was located and scanned.

Customs said anomalies were detected in the bag and it was forwarded to the Trans National Crime and Narcotics Division office at the airport for further investigation.

The man was taken into custody. The Gleaner said that he reportedly told investigators that he was paid US$5,000 to transport and deliver the cocaine.
