Dead baby found in city hotel’s trash can

The corpse of a baby, believed to have been born in the Sunflower Hotel at the corner of South Road and Cummings Street, was yesterday found in a trash can at the rear of the hotel.

It was a girl.

Around 7am, a snackette attendant ventured out to the back of the hotel and made the gruesome discovery.

The baby, believed to have died during childbirth, was wrapped in a cloth. It is suspected that she was dumped in the trash can by her mother, who later left hotel after the discovery was made.

An employee of the hotel’s snackette, who asked not to be named, told Stabroek News that the mother fled the scene after persons started questioning the treatment meted out to the infant.

“It was a nice baby, small head and nice. She was very pretty but for someone to dump her so it’s heartless,” the worker said.

She added that after the discovery, the police were summoned but by the time they arrived the mother had already fled.

The baby’s body was later transported to the Lyken’s Funeral Home, where it is being kept pending a post-mortem examination.
