Man stabbed in fight at Mandela gas station

A man sustained a gaping stab wound to his abdomen after a fight with another man at the Texaco, Mandela Avenue gas station last evening.

Injured is Andre Valentine, 26, also known as ‘Andre Jack,’ a fish cleaner of Lot 8, East La Penitence, South Georgetown.

According to reports, around 7:30 last evening, Valentine entered to Mandela Avenue gas station to fill his motorcycle when he was attacked by another man.

According to an eyewitness, the wounded man had moments earlier stopped in front of the gas pump when a young woman, with whom he shares a child, hopped off of another bike and walked across to him. He said that the woman approached Valentine and the two started to argue.

As the two argued, the assailant, who was riding the bike on which the woman arrived, pulled out a knife and attacked Valentine, the witness recounted. According to the man, Valentine fell to the ground and his assailant proceeded to stab him. ”The man pull out a long knife and stab he in he belly and if yo see how much blood been there,” the witness said.

The assailant and the young woman then sped off on the motorcycle while the wounded Valentine managed to get on his bike and ride to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

A hospital source told Stabroek News that he arrived there with intestines protruding and collapsed on arrival. He was later rushed into the Accident and Emergency (A&E) unit of the hospital. The man’s relatives arrived at the hospital soon after.

His stepfather noted that he was later taken to the main operating theatre of the hospital around 9:30 last evening for emergency surgery as his condition worsened.

The stepfather told this newspaper at the family’s home that Valentine had been experiencing problems with the mother of his son over the past several months. He said that the two separated several months ago and he noted that Valentine would often complain about the young woman’s behaviour. He said that the woman would show up at their home with the child and inform relatives that she was seeing someone else. “She does come here   with other men and he (Valentine) does chase she because she only provoking he,” the man stated.

A report of the incident was made to police at the public hospital and ranks later travelled to the Tucville area in search of the suspect.
