Foreign policy is priority on 33rd Caricom summit agenda

The Caricom Secretariat says Foreign Policy Co-ordination in the Caribbean Community is priority on the agenda of the 33rd Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government that starts today in St Lucia.

In a press release, Caricom said leaders will be examining the thrust of the Community’s Foreign Policy approach given the ongoing changes in global political and economic circumstances. “These changes pose challenges to the continuing development of the Community as well as for the practice of the Community’s external and political relations,” it said. However, they also create opportunities that can be exploited to the benefit of the Community.

Caricom Chairman and Prime Minister of St Lucia Dr Kenny D Anthony will preside over the three-day meeting of leaders and it is expected that with the exception of the Prime Minister of Belize all Heads of Government will be present.

The agenda also includes discussion on the ongoing reform process in the Community as well as developments in Haiti and matters in relation to youth development in particular those arising from the recent high level meeting between Caricom youth and those from the Union of South American Nations.

The gathering of the Heads of Government was preceded by the meetings of the Council for Finance and Planning on Monday, and the Prime Ministerial Sub-Committees on the Caricom Single Market and Economy and on External Negotiations yesterday.

Recommendations from these sessions will also be submitted to the Heads of Government.
