Over 10 local artists featured in new city gallery

Amazon Authentics, owned by local artist Irene Bacchus-Holder, has opened an art gallery in the city and features the work of over ten local artists.

The gallery, located above Rayon House of Fashion, Robb Street, Georgetown, features pieces made of exotic wood in the form of household items, painting, creative jewellery and batik clothing.

Bacchus-Holder told Stabroek News that she thought opening a gallery would give local artists a boost and expose their work to the general public.

She said “There are not a lot of places where artists are able to display their pieces and I want to change that. So that is how the idea of having a gallery came about.”

She explained that she became registered as a business in 2002 under the name ‘Irene’s Creative Handicraft’ but later renamed it Amazon Authentics.

Bacchus-Holder stated “I came up with the name because I use authentic wood from the Amazon Rainforest to create my pieces and make them look beautiful.”

The art of Pyrography on some boxes by Irene Bacchus-Holder

She added that she began operating in Linden and still has a presence there, but she sees the city as a more bustling place since most tourists frequent the city as compared to Linden.

She explained that she mastered the art of Pyrography, which is burning and later discovered that she can use the same wood she works with to create exotic pieces that can be used every day.

She said “I do a lot of pyrography on a lot of functional items such as boxes and bread boards…”
Bacchus-Holder urged the general public to visit the gallery and be amazed by the work of art and at the same time they can take home pieces that are very affordable.
