Motor cyclist killed in accident

A 22-year-old man was killed last evening when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a motor car at the corner of Conversation Tree and the Railway Embankment. A man said to be the driver of the car was later admitted to the Georgetown Hospital.

Dead is Orlando August of Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara.

Details on the accident which occurred around 1930 hours are sketchy. Stabroek News was told that a female was driving the car at the time of the accident and was in the company of a male passenger. Following the accident the man drove the already dead August to the hospital claiming that he was the driver.

August was taken to the hospital around 1950 hours where he was pronounced dead on arrival. He sustained severe injuries to the head and torso.

Stabroek News was told that while giving a statement to the police, the man alleged that he was unwell.

He was receiving treatment in the accident and emergency unit of the hospital at press time and officials there told this newspaper that he would be kept overnight for observation.

Relatives of the man killed were too distraught to speak to this newspaper when approached. Most said that they were unaware of the circumstances surrounding the accident or where August was heading.

At the scene, broken glass littered the roadway. The mangled motor cycle was lying at the side of the road.

Persons who passed the scene recalled a man holding up August’s head minutes after the accident. At that point this newspaper was told he appeared dead.

Police are continuing investigations into this latest road fatality.
