Khan, Drayton Topco Juice chess winners

National chess champion Taffin Khan continued his winning ways on the local scene when he won the annual Topco Juices Mashramani tournament over the week-end at the Kei-Shar’s Sports Club.

Khan ended the eight round tournament with seven points and a half points.

Only top junior player Anthony Drayton managed as much as a draw with the reigning national men’s champ.

Maria Thomas with five points and Frankie Farley with four and one half points were second and third respectively.

Drayton, as expected, won the junior category but not before suffering a scare after he lost to cecil Cox.

Cox, one of the youngest persons ever to win the national junior championship, defeated Drayton but ended in second place on six points to Drayton’s six and one half.

On his way to the title win, Drayton managed an upset defeat of senior player David Khan, Taffin’s father.

Cox was second and Roberto Neto of Diamond Secondary,  third.

Neto’s school-mate, Viddesh Shameer placed fourth while young Heimraj Resaul of Marian Academy received a medal for being the best newcomer.
