Bollers wins sprint double at Morvand Jets/Mustang Games

University of Guyana student/athlete Elton Bollers enhanced his growing reputation by winning the sprint double at the Morvand Jets/Mustang Games in Trinidad and Tobago last week-end.

Bollers won the 100M in 10.88s and the 200m in 21.51s.

His 200m time was among the fastesttimes recorded by a Guyanese athlete this year.

Bollers along with another UG student/athlete Neil Barry jnr., also participated at the Sagicor National Champion-ships in Trinidad and Tobago at the Hasely Crawford Stadium but without the same measure of success.

The two athletes were eliminated in the semi finals of the star studded 400m field, a field which included the likes of Renny Quow and Grenadian subordinate to Kirani James, Rondell Bartholomew as well as upcoming Trinidadian 400M ace Machel Cedenio.

Neil Barry Jr., and Elton Bollers, right.

So competitive was the men’s 400M event that a whopping 37 athletes entered and the organizers were forced to scheduled some nine heats.

Bollers finished fourth in a personal best time of 48.89s while Barry, who was nursing a hamstring strain sustained during training in the National Park, finished sixth.

The `A’ class final was won by Lalonde Gordon in 45.40s while the international event was won by Bralon Taplin in 46.37s.

The athletes told Stabroek Sport that they gained valuable exposure competing against some of the region’s best.

Bollers and Barry had earlier this year, helped propel the University of Guyana sprint medley team to a silver medal at the Barbados Relay Fair at that nation’s national stadium.
The athletes are now anticipating competing at the University ‘Olympics’ to be held in Russia in 2013.

The athletes’ participation in the games would not have been possible without generous endorsements from Spicy Dish, Fitness Express, Daddy’s, Wartsila, Bryden and Fernandes Inc, Bakewell, Land Surveys and Mines Limited and the University of Guyana Students’ Society.
