Jaguars getting in shape for Friday’s qualifier against El Salvador

Guyana’s national football team (the Golden Jaguars) is currently preparing for their key home and away 2014 World Cup fixtures against El Salvador on Friday.

Yesterday the players underwent a beep test at the National Gymnasium under the watchful eyes of assistant coach Wayne `Wiggy’ Dover.

Also present were Brazilian trainer Americo Falopa, goalkeeper coach Andrew Hazel and Faizal Khan of Temptation Promotions.

Regular coach Jamaal Shabazz is absent owing to engagements with Trinidad & Tobago Pro League team Caledonia AIA in the CONCACAF Champions League.

Placing much emphasis on fitness, the Jaguars apart from yesterday’s sessions which Dover said would have last approximately two hours, have also been working out in the mornings at the Body Max Gym under the supervision of Brazilian trainer Falopa while in the afternoons they have been doing tactical work at the Police Sports Club Ground under Dover.

The camp is made up of 16 local players including Anthony “Awo” Abrams and Vurlon Mills, veteran mid-fielder Kayode McKinnon, Konata Mannings, wingers Dwain Jacobs, Dwight Peters and Andrew Murray jr,.

According to Dover the team was to play a practice game last evening at the Tucville Playfield.

United States-based, mid-fielder Nick Millington and Sweden-based Canadian defender Jamaal Smith are expected to join the squad in the next few days.

Before heading to El Salvador, the final 20-man squad will be named.
