GPL signs on to GT&T Mobile Money

The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) says that the Guyana Power and Light Inc. last week signed on to the GT&T Mobile Money service so customers can now pay their electricity bills or buy prepaid tokens using their cellular phones.

A release from GT&T said that the company was pleased to offer this easy, convenient and cheap alternative payment method to its customers.   It said that Mobile Money registered customers can now pay their post-paid accounts or they can purchase their pre-paid tokens using this service. Post-paid payments attract a fee of G$60 while pre-paid carries a G$100 fee.

Mobile Money Director Eshwar Thakurdin was quoted as saying, “Payment of GPL bills via Mobile Money is the only payment service which gives the customer real-time access to buy their own pre-paid tokens. That is, they can buy their prepaid token any time, day or night, holiday, Sunday, at home or on-the-go.”

The release said that paper receipts are replaced by text messages which provide all the pertinent information including date, amount, token number, meter number and kilowatt hour.
The Mobile Money service allows GT&T mobile customers to deposit cash in their mobile wallet (cellular phone), make withdrawals, pay various GT&T and GPL bills, transfer money and buy GT&T Credit.

Mobile Money transactions can be done from any handset on the GT&T network.  Free registration is available at any GT&T Business Office or at agents countrywide. Deposits and withdrawals can also be made at GT&T office or Mobile Money agents.

Since its launch in March this year, the service has been rapidly expanding across Guyana, the release added.
