$150,000 bail for man accused of threatening sister, assaulting cop

Bail was yesterday set at $150,000 for Kurt Heligar after he was arraigned on three charges, including threatening his sister and assaulting a police officer.

Heligar, 45, of Prashad Nagar, pleaded not guilty to all three charges when he appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It was alleged that on November 29, at Prashad Nagar, Heligar threatened his sister Samela Joseph. It was also alleged that on the same day he used indecent language when addressing Joseph and unlawfully assaulted Police Constable Clive Clark as he acted in the execution of his duties.

Police prosecutor Renetta Bentham said that Heligar threatened to burn the house where he and his sister reside while she was inside. She said he also cuffed Police Constable Clark, bursting his lips as a result of the attack.

Bentham did not object to bail being granted but asked that Heligar be placed on a bond to keep the peace pending the outcome of the proceedings.

After Magistrate Latchman asked Joseph whether there was anything she would like to share with the court, the woman said that Heligar constantly abuses her and when she approaches him later about his behaviour he usually denies he ever said anything to her. She added that she feared for her life since her brother resides in the lower flat of her house.

She also said he cursed her the night before they were scheduled to make a court appearance.

Magistrate Latchman subsequently set bail at $30,000 for Heligar’s assault charge and at $60,000 each for the indecent language and threatening language charges.

Heligar, after being told of the bail amounts, asked Magistrate Latchman whether she would oblige him the time to say a few words in his defence. “Yo’ honour, I never touch this woman. This is a pack of rubbish … Ah asking for a reduction in bail, yo’ honour, I can’t afford so much,” Heligar said when given permission to address the court.

Magistrate Latchman, however, informed him that she did not wish to reduce his bail and advised him that he could apply to the High Court for a reduction.

Heligar is scheduled to return to court on December 9.
