Rain brings premature end to practice match

Persistent rainfall yesterday forced an early end to the three-day warm up match at the Everest Cricket Club ground between Guyana and a team comprised of players on the reserve list. The Guyana team narrowly secured first innings honours on day two before extending the lead by the end of the day.

Guyana batted first and scored 144 and then dismissed the team of reserve players for 143 in 38.4 overs.

National skipper in all three formats of the game Veerasammy Permaul finished with 6-25 with his left arm orthodox style deliveries while fast bowler Ronsford Beaton took 3-25 and medium pacer Paul Wintz 1-2.

In their second turn at the crease Guyana were 192/5 after 67 overs at the end of what turned out to be the second and final day’s play. Middle order batsman Leon Johnson faced 125 balls and hit three fours and one six in 48.

Johnson and Steven Jacobs put together 53 for the third wicket before Jacobs, who faced 61 balls for his 31 runs, was dismissed by Anthony Adams. Christopher Barnwell remained unbeaten on 45 which came off 83 balls and included five fours. With him at stumps was Derwin Christian, who was 21 not out.  Anthony Adams, who took a five-wicket haul in the first innings, had taken 2-51 for the team of reserve players in the second innings.

The National team used the early finish to their advantage by having the players participate in the ‘Beep Test’, which measures a player’s fitness level, particularly in the area of speed-recovery. Guyana’s first match of the Regional domestic season will be played on February 7 in Antigua.
