GTTA serves off Team table tennis league next week

The Guyana Table Tennis Association’s (GTTA) League Teams Table Tennis tournament will get into full swing next week and includes the participation of several teams top in Georgetown as well as from out-of-town areas.

According to a GTTA release, the tournament is expected to commence on March 15 with teams from Bartica, Linden and Berbice competing. The venue for the tournament has not yet been fixed by the GTTA. The tournament however, will feature three divisions, A, B and C representative of the various skill levels and each team must comprise at least three players. Additionally there will be a limitation in the A division of one senior national player per team.

President of the GTTA Godfrey Munroe told Stabroek Sport yesterday that the league had been a regular feature in the GTTA’s calendar of events a few years ago and his executives felt that its reintroduction was essential at this time.

“The central thrust of the league tournament was to keep to players active throughout in a competitive realm,” Munroe said.
The GTTA president said the frequent competitive play will be a supplementary asset in players’ development in addition to their weekly training regimen.

Munroe also stated that the tournament should be able to assist the junior national players in their preparation for upcoming regional tournaments.

Munroe said that the GTTA intends on having the national junior players compete together so that they develop chemistry and team tactics to help improve their performance in the team format of those upcoming regional tournament. Munroe said that many times in the past, the junior team players were playing together for the first time as a team at the actual competition and the league should help remedy that situation.  The GTTA recently selected a squad of 21 players to compete at the Caribbean Junior and Cadet Championships that will be held next month in Trinidad and Tobago.
