Pacer Cotterrell dent Tridents as Hawksbills win

NORTH SOUND, Antigua, CMC – A four-wicket haul from paceman Sheldon Cotterell and an enterprising 31 from debutant Orlando Peters steered the Antigua Hawksbills to a convincing five-wicket victory over the Barbados Tridents in their CPL T20 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Hawksbills restricted the Tridents to 97 for 9 off their 20 overs and then reached the target for the loss of five wickets with six balls to spare. Captain Marlon Samuels was not out 18 and Devon Thomas not out six.

It was the second loss in the last two matches for the top-of-the-table Tridents, who are still leading with eight points as teams position themselves for semifinal berths.

Cotterell , a left-arm seamer, set-up the easy victory for the Hawksbills with some incisive fast-bowling that rattled the Tridents , in tandem with quality good spells from  West Indies seamer Kemar Roach and spinners  Samuels and Raheem Cornwall.

Bowling with pace and bounce on a helpful pitch, Cotterrell was also named Man-of-the-match for his four wickets for 20 runs which crippled the Tridents and made them struggle throughout the innings. The Jamaican soldier held figures of four for 16 up until the last ball of his fourth over before Davendra Bishoo moved smartly inside the delivery and helped it away for a boundary.

Roach, who accounted for the hard-hitting Tridents’ captain Keiron Pollard without scoring, took two for 17 and Marlon Samuels, 2 for 12.

Young Ramon Reifer, playing his first game of the tournament, top-scored for the Tridents with a defiant 30 off 42 balls before he was seventh out, playing on to a well-pitched ball from Samuels in the 18th over.

Orlando Peters, another young talent who was only drafted into the Hawksbills squad days ago, also shone on the night as he steered the run chase for the Antiguan side with an attacking 31 off 22 balls.

Batting at No.4, Peters slammed three fours and two sixes before he was dismissed in the 11th over as he edged a delivery from pacer Shanon Gabriel to the wicketkeeper.

From 65 for four in the 12th over, and with the opposition seeking to gain a psychological advantage with mind games, captain Samuels then played a restrained innings to see the Hawksbills home with six balls to spare.

Shoaib Malik, with one wicket for three runs from his four overs, was the leading bowler for the Tridents.
