Duo on $100,000 bail over La Penitence assault

Facing a charge of beating and wounding a man, two men were yesterday granted $100,000 bail each when they appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Co-defendants Desmond Singh, of A1 Orange Walk, Bourda and Vickram Sanchan, of 51 Middle Road, La Penitence, were not required to plead to the charge which alleged that they, on February 1, at Third Street, La Penitence, unlawfully and maliciously wounded Maurice Teixeira.

According to Prosecutor Michael Grant, Singh accused Teixeira of slapping him. The two defendants then allied against the man, beating him and wounding him, he added.

Prosecutor Grant raised an objection to bail, stating that the men might tamper with the witness. He also revealed that he was in possession of a medical for Teixeira.

According to Sanchan’s attorney Oswald Legall, Teixeira had slapped his client and there had been an altercation between the two. He also used the opportunity to request reasonable bail.

Prosecutor Grant’s objections were overruled by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and the men were granted $100,000 bail. They are set to return to court on February 6.
