Police shoot would-be robber -victim wounded during exchange

A lone gunman, who attempted to rob a woman at gunpoint in ‘C’ Field, Sophia yesterday was shot in his shoulder and midsection by police after he opened fire on them.

The man’s intended victim was also wounded in the exchange.

The man was chased by police along the street and he jumped into a nearby trench where he was arrested.

The woman was shot in her neck and buttocks during an exchange of gunfire between the police and her attacker. She was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital for medical attention along with her attacker.

One eyewitness said he saw the woman walking out of the street when she was approached by the gunman, who was identified by the police as Keron Cummings, 24, of Sophia. He said he saw Cummings pull out a gun and then heard the police call out to him.

The man added that Cummings shot at the police and they returned fire. He said Cummings ran up the road and then suddenly leapt into the trench opposite the Sophia Health Centre. It was there the police arrested him.

According to a police press release an unlicensed .38 revolver with 3 live rounds and a spent shell were found in the trench.
