Ramotar lauds Backer’s contribution to national politics

President Donald Ramotar said yesterday that former speaker Deborah Backer did not only contribute to her political party but also to national politics.

Ramotar made these comments in the wake of Backer’s sudden death on Friday morning. She had been ill for some time prior to her passing.

A press release from GINA yesterday said that despite being on opposite sides of the political divide, the President and Backer always maintained a very good relationship with their last contact being on Christmas Day, last year.

“She was very optimistic as is typical of Debbie, and full of life. Even though she was sick, she didn’t allow that to dampen her mood,” the President was quoted as saying.

He extended his sympathy to the family, friends and members of the APNU political party on her sudden passing.
