Cop caught in bribe sting

A Den Amstel policeman was caught red handed taking a bribe to free a man who was arrested, a police release said yesterday.

According to the police release, a man was arrested on Friday on a threatening language allegation and the said police officer had arranged with him to settle the matter for a sum of money. A part of the money was paid and the man was released from police custody to get the remainder.

However, on his release the man informed senior police officials and the rank was later caught in the sting that was set up.

The policeman has since been placed under close arrest and the matter is being investigated by the Police Office of Professional responsibility.
