President would like law amended to allow for more casino licences

President Donald Ramotar said that he would like the gambling law amended so that all hotels which met the criteria would be given a casino licence, and not just three for each region as is the case at present.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference at State House, he said that in the case of the Sun and Sands Hotel it was given a casino licence because it met the requirement needed to get one. “It is because they are building a hotel similar to the Marriott,” Ramotar said.

The Princess Hotel on the East Bank Demerara has a casino licence, as well as the Marriott Hotel.

Together with the Sun and Sands Hotel this fills the casino quota for Region Four.

He informed the media that he would like the laws to be amended so that not only three hotels in each administrative region would be given casino licences but all hotels which met the criteria.

“In fact I would like to amend the law that anyone building hotels of that size and that nature should have a casino licence,” he said.
