Man charged over murder of Mahaica farmer

The man accused of fatally chopping Mahaica farmer, Balkissoon, appeared before the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court on Friday charged with murder.

It is alleged that Dhupaul Singh, 55, of Helena Number Two, murdered Balkissoon on September 2 at Mahaica. Singh was not required to plead to the indictable charge, when it was read by Magistrate Zamilla Ally.

Balkissoon, 52, of Lot 107 Helena Number Two, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, died in the arms of his son, Robby Balkissoon, who witnessed the chopping.

Balkissoon’s son told Stabroek News that his father had an argument with the man, identified as ‘Tailor man,’ who had hurled insults about the dead farmer’s wife.

Later in the day, Robby said, the man walked up to Balkissoon and “he just tell me father he gon kill he” before firing a chop to the left side of the man’s neck and then making good his escape. An autopsy confirmed that the farmer bled to death as a result of a chop wound to his neck. The case will be called again on September 26.
