Route 44 drivers call off strike

Route 44 minibus operators did not continue their strike action for fare increase yesterday, but said the “government buses” showed up to provide free transportation.

Operators said they will make a decision today on the way forward.

Speaking with Stabroek News last evening, one of the drivers stated the strike was abandoned, although he gave no reason for that decision. He said many passengers chose to travel with the 44-seater buses provided by the government.

Last week, some drivers who spoke with Stabroek News had expressed their dissatisfaction with the current $200 fare. They were asking for at least 50% increase to make a profit on the 23-mile journey from Georgetown to Mahaica.

The cost to full their gas tanks according to the drivers, is $15,000. However they only gain $5,000 profit.
