Craig man on gun, ammo charges after cops spot suspicious bulge

A Craig, East Bank Demerara man was yesterday arraigned on charges of unlawful possession of a gun and ammunition after lawmen noticed a bulge in his waist and decided to search him.

Jermain Chapman, of Craig Public Road, was remanded to prison after pleading not guilty to the charges when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts.

It was alleged that on October 17, Chapman had in his possession a 9mm pistol and 10 live rounds of 9mm ammunition without being a holder of a firearm licence at the time.

Prosecutor Michael Grant told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that police were on duty at the time when Chapman passed by and they noticed a bulge in his waist.

They then stopped him and conducted a search and found the pistol in the waist of his pants. Upon opening it, they discovered the 10 rounds of ammunition, he also said.

Prosecutor Grant objected to bail based on the prevalence of the offence and Chapman was remanded to prison until November 30, when the case will be called at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
