An altercation between two vagrants ended up in court on Tuesday where one of them was charged with robbery-with-violence.
The charge against Robert Gittens stated that on October 17, on Middle Street, Georgetown, he robbed James Sandiford of $6,000 while using personal violence before or after robbing him.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge while stating that he did not rob Sandiford though he admitted to using personal violence.
Prosecutor Michael Grant, in relating the details of the case, stated that on the night in question the two men were sleeping on the pavement when a misunderstanding occurred. Afterward, Gittens, he said, lashed Sandiford about his body and face with a stick, while relieving him of $6,000 cash.
Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry refused to grant bail because Gittens could not produce a fixed address where he could be found.
He is required to return to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on November 14, when statements are expected to be filed in the case.
