Knife-point robber jailed for four years

Seron Skeete, an employee of Cevon’s Waste Management, was yesterday sentenced to 48 months in jail after he was found guilty of robbing a woman.

The charge against Skeete, 33, was that on August 23, on Saffon Street, being armed with a knife, he robbed Nankumarie Maraj of a shoulder bag. At the time the bag contained her cell phone and lunch bowl, which were valued at $7,500 in total.

The unrepresented Skeete consistently denied knowledge of the allegations during his trial, which was presided over by Magistrate Judy Latchman, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Police said Nankumarie was trying to get her vehicle started and approached Skeete to borrow his knife to cut a bottle to make a funnel. After she returned his knife, he snatched her bag, which was in the front seat of her vehicle. According to

police, as she attempted to claim her bag, she was threatened by Skeete with the knife and as a result she became fearful and didn’t raise an alarm.

However, a police patrol which was on duty soon arrived and Nankumarie informed the officers of the robbery.

The police went in pursuit of Skeete, who was held with the stolen items in his possession along with the knife.

Skeete had claimed in a statement given to the police that he went to buy a pack tennis rolls, cheese and drinks when the police came and arrested him.
