City workers caught dumping garbage on street

Mayor and City Council (M&CC) workers were on Wednesday caught dumping garbage on the junction of Schumacker and Water streets.

Although the M&CC workers were photographed dumping huge bins of rubbish in the area, City Hall officials yesterday denied any knowledge of their activities.

Blogger Mark Jacobs witnessed the actions of the council workers and documented it on his site along with photographs of the activity.

He said after being confronted by drivers and other passers-by, the workers “let loose a series of expletives” and one of them claimed that they were acting on the instructions of acting Town Clerk Carol Sooba.

“I was under the notion, now seemingly mis-guided, that the selected town clerk and the national government was on a mission to clean up the city. As opposed to moving garbage from plain sight and dumping it on side streets,” Jacobs wrote.

When Stabroek News called Sooba to verify the information, it was told that she had no knowledge of such actions by M&CC workers.

M&CC Public Rela-tions Officer Royston King also denied knowledge of the actions of the workers, while noting that he had no report of such nature.

In addition, Director of Solid Waste Management Walter Narine also denied knowledge of the actions of the workers.

He claimed that he goes with orders and if the workers claimed that Sooba ordered them to dump garbage there, then she should be contacted to verify that information.

Narine added that Puran Brothers Disposal Inc was contracted to collect garbage from that area. He also made mention of the fact that two bins at the location were provided by Puran Brothers. The area is a regular dump site for many and when Stabroek News’ visited yesterday there was an overflow of refuse spreading to the corners of the roadways.

The situation is an annoyance for commuters since it attracts vagrants and the stench contaminates the air.
