Dolphin Secondary among winners on day one of Milo U20 competition

Dolphin, Tucville and Charlestown Secondary schools emerged winners on day one of the second annual Milo-U20 football competition which kicked off on Saturday at the Ministry of Education ground.

In the first of the four games played yesterday, Dolphin drubbed Cummings Lodge 4-nil on the backs of Samuel Hunte (7th and 9th minutes), (Shawn Mohamed 30th) and (John Caesar 70th).

Bishops’ High School drew with St. Mary’s High one-all in game two, Tucville defeated Freeburg Secondary two-nil,

(Keifer Brandt 17th and Jamal Trim 41st) in the penultimate game while Charlestown gained a walk over victory over St. Joseph’s High.

Sean Turney (25th) and Nathaniel King (69th) were the goal scorers for St. Mary’s and Bishops High respectively.

The round robin competition continues today at the same venue at 10:00hrs with four more matches.

Meanwhile, after a colorful march past involving the competing teams, co-director of the Petra Organization, Troy Mendonca gave a brief history of how the tournament started during the opening ceremony of the event and reminded those in attendance that the initiative is geared towards the development of youth football players in city schools.

The other director of the Petra Organisation, Marlan Cole, reminded that five scholarships will be rewarded to the footballers who desires to further their studies at the University of Guyana.

It was also disclosed that the Petra organization which is responsible for coordinating the tournament, has partnered with the Ministry of Health to spread the message on gender based violence. The captains for each team will have a snippet to read before each game is played.

Cole and Mendonca also thanked the sponsors, Beepat’s Trading and the Milo brand for sponsoring the tournament.
