Britton upsets Bryan to claim men’s singles title

Shemar Britton upset national men’s singles champion Nigel Bryan on Saturday to win the men’s singles title as the National Sports Commission sponsored Mashramani table tennis tournament ended at the National Gymnasium.

Britton won the best of seven encounter 4-0 by scores of 11-3, 13-11, 11-7 and 11-6.

In the semi-finals Bryan defeated Kyle Edghill 3-1 (6-11, 11-9, 11-5, 12-10) while Britton whipped  Joel Alleyne 3-0 ( 11-3, 11-4, 11-6).

Britton also got the better of  Bryan in the Open U21 semi-final which he won 3-1 ( 11-5, 10-12, 11-5, 11-8) which allowed him to advance to the final where he defeated Elishaba Johnson 11-8, 11-5, 11-8, 11-8.

Johnson had gotten the better of Stefan Corlette 3-0 ( 14-12, 11-8, 11-9) in the other semi-final.

Chelsea Edghill won the women’s singles title when she defeated Natalie Cummings 4-2 in the final.

Edghill won 10-12, 13-11, 2-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-7.

In the semifinals Cummings defeated Jody Ann Blake  3-1 while Edghill got past Akecia Nedd also by a 3-1 margin.

Nicolas Romain won the novices category beating Brandon Hutson 3-1 in the final.

In the semi-finals Romain defeated Emmerson Mc Koy 3-1  while Hutson edged Shakiel Lewis 3-2 .
