The Coast Guards and Base Camp Stephenson were crowned male and female champions, defeating First Infantry and Base Camp Ayanganna respectively when the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Inter-Unit championships concluded on Wednesday.
Coast Guards edged First Infantry 4-3 on penalty kicks after normal and extra time finished 0-0 while Base Camp Stephenson downed the home side by a 2-0 score, at the games held at the GDF ground.
Taking the third spot in the men’s section was Defence Headquarters who defeated Second Infantry 3-2. With the win, the Coast Guards collected the championship trophy and medals while First Infantry received the second place accolade and medals.
Base Camp Stephenson for their showing collected the championship title and the respective medals while Base Camp Ayanganna for their efforts, collected the runners-up trophy and medals.
Defence Headquarters for securing the third spot collected the third place trophy and corresponding medals. In the men’s finale, Coast Guards custodian Kevin Price proved to be the difference between the sides as he denied two consecutive penalty attempts to seal the title.
With the penalty shoot-out locked at 3-3, Price denied Jermin Fraser at the beginning of the fourth round of penalty kicks to give his side a chance to take the lead. They quickly capitalised when they netted from the spot to make it 4-3.
Needing to score in the final round of the shoot-out to keep his side in the match-up, Michael Humphrey unfortunately was denied by Price brilliantly to his right to spark the wild celebrations.
In the women’s showdown, the duo of Shaniza Nestor and Kendra Thom clinched the title for the Timehri based unit when they found the back of the net in the fourth and 33rd minutes correspondingly.
In the individual section of the presentation ceremony, Everson Williams of First Infantry was adjudged to be the event’s most valuable player. He was also the tourney’s leading marksman, scoring six goals. For his showing he received, a pair of football cleats, a pair of shin-guards and a football.
Meanwhile, Price claimed the best goal-keeper award. He was awarded a pair of shin-guards, a pair of football cleats and a football.
