Businessman gets bail after not guilty plea to wife abuse charges

A businessman is now on $80,000 bail after being charged with abusing his wife.

Andre Fraser, of 783 South Turkeyen, appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally on Monday charged with verbally and physically abusing his wife, Eneca Fraser. He was also charged with threatening behaviour and threatening language.

He pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.

All of the four offences were allegedly committed on December 27, 2014, at ‘C’ Field, Sophia. Although no details were given in relation to the charges, Prosecutor John Singh objected to bail and said the husband and wife were given opportunities to seek counselling but the abuse continued.

Singh stated that if the accused is granted bail, it was likely that he would abuse his wife again. He also said other charges are to be laid against him.

But Fraser’s lawyer, Clive Harris, argued that the offences before the court were bail-able and the prosecutor’s claim that more charges will be filed against his client should not prevent the court from granting bail. Harris also said the man would be willing to move out of the matrimonial home and live with his mother in the Joint Services Scheme.

As a result, Magistrate Ally set bail at $20,000 for each charge. Fraser was also ordered to reside at his mother until the matters are concluded.

The matters are due to be heard next on January 29 at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
