Bank of Guyana celebrates 50 years of service

Minister of Finance Dr Ashni Singh and Governor of the Bank of Guyana Dr Gobind Ganga on Wednesday unveiled a plaque emblazoned on the façade of the bank in honour of its 50th anniversary celebration.

Both doctors Singh and Ganga, along with managerial and other staff celebrated the occasion under the theme ‘Promoting Financial Development for Guyana’s Prosperity.’ Numerous events have been planned to mark the golden jubilee anniversary all year long.

In his feature address, Dr Singh said achieving 50 years is meaningful and deserving of celebration though it does not preclude projections for future achievements. He said too the founding of the bank in 1965 is inseparable from the birthing of the nation as shortly after its establishment, Guyana became an independent nation.

The minister also noted the contributions made by late former governor of the bank Lawrence Williams and acknowledged the efforts of all the other staff members, particularly during the global financial crisis which, he said, has often gone unrecognised. “As the nation evolved, so did the bank which grew from strength to strength and it has played an integral role in contributing to Guyana’s achievements,” he said. The minister emphasised that the successes were not a result of luck but of strong systems, operations and management which ensured compliance with regulations. He then commended the current governor and staff for their efforts and encouraged them to continue to strive for greater success and to preserve the integrity of the institution.
