Interior shop owner accused of shooting Brazilian

A Bartica shop owner, accused of shooting at a Brazilian national, was yesterday placed on $200,000 bail at a city court.

It is alleged that Kentroy Cadogan, 37, of Lot 102 First Avenue, Bartica, on September 17th discharged rounds at Joel Fereira De Andrade, with the intent to unlawfully and maliciously maim, harm or disfigure him. The shooting allegedly took place at Backwater Landing, Cuyuni River.

Cadogan, who was represented by attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The validity of the charge against Cadogan was called into question by Fung-A-Fat, who accused the police of badly investigating the matter.

The attorney stated that the incident in question had actually occurred much earlier in the year and that more than four months had elapsed before his client was arrested out of the blue. He further related that the accused, who is the owner of a string of shops in the interior, was arrested at one of his business locations.

Fung-A-Fat alleged that no identification parade had been held prior to the defendant’s arrest, nor was a confession ever given by Cadogan. Furthermore, he stated that the accused was not even acquainted with the virtual complainant, who he believes to be an illegal Brazilian immigrant, and had never seen the man before.

It was on these grounds that Fung-A-Fat requested reasonable bail be granted to the accused. He added that Cadogan was not a flight risk and would willingly submit his passport if necessary.

Prosecutor Deniro Jones stated that he had no objections to bail as long as it was a substantial amount.

Magistrate Ann McLennan placed Cadogan on $200,000 bail and ordered him to make his next court appearance on October 21st, when his next hearing is scheduled for the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
