Nasty habit

Dear Editor,

Do we have an epidemic of enlarged prostates in Guyana, or is this just a nasty habit? Men relieving themselves against utility poles (lantern posts), trees, people’s fences, car wheels, is a common sight around Georgetown, and it begs the question: can’t these men hold their urine until they find a toilet? Women do.

Now these are not just elderly men, who may have health problems, the main culprits are usually young men.

Every time I see a man shamelessly relieving himself in public, Allison Hinds’ song comes to mind, and I want to shout at them: “…hold… hold it man, hold it man, hold… Control it man, hold it man!”

If you can’t, men of Guyana, then we need to get the Ministry of Health involved to stem what would have to be an epidemic of some sort. But first, perhaps we should take a leaf out of Bermuda’s book, and see if publicly disgracing offenders would ease the problem.

They tackled the issue by photographing and videotaping culprits and posting these images in the newspapers and on TV. Could that work in GT? It’s a disgusting practice that has got to be halted in mid-stream (pun intended).

Yours faithfully,
