City does not have a single brush cutter, no materials for repairs

Dear Editor,

I consider it my duty to let the suffering citizens of our Capital City know of the cruel trick that is being orchestrated by President Donald Ramotar, Norman Whittaker (Minister of Local Government), their Town Clerk (ag) Carol Sooba and Carvil Duncan of the Guyana Labour Union (GLU).

Mr. Duncan took some of his members on May Day – with the PPP-biased unions which were addressed by President Ramotar at the National Park – the other unions assembled at the Critchlow Labour College.

The trick played on the City by this quartet (Whittaker, Sooba, Duncan, Ramotar) is as follows:

  1. The Town Clerk (ag) ensures that the workers who are members of the GLU are paid on time to protect the union leadership.
  2. These workers and their supervisors have no tools, no materials, no protective gear, so they are not productively utilized, but the quartet cares little about this, citizens are not served – example insufficient spray cans, one spray can to two workers – an M&CC joke.
  3. We do not have a single brush cutter so the operators are paid for doing nothing.
  4. No materials to do basic repair – nails, wood, etc.
  5. No parts to repair and maintain the dwindling fleet of vehicles.

The Mayoral Complex has no photocopying machine. No Fax Machine, no printer etc.

The international community is willing to help with the restoration of City Hall, one of our historic buildings – but cannot hear from the Ministers responsible.

The office in the Promenade Gardens has to be dismantled since it is unsafe for staff.

Kitty Market is waiting for a tragedy in spite of appeals for help. The President promises to help – end of story.

We had money making operations at the Stabroek Market Stelling, a speed boat operation, a paid parking business east of the Stabroek Market no reason, no notice, the Government took these away, even though the idea was ours.

Parking in the city, is chaotic the Government refuses to agree to implement a prepared parking plan – some of the lands identified have since been ‘sold or given’ to friends of the PPP.

The Training Division building of the City Constabulary is in a deplorable state.

No road repairs, except vote catching patching by the Ministry of Public Works.

Of course we have the unbelievable – Sooba is allowed to flout every decision made by the duly elected Mayor and Councillors of Georgetown.

Much more can be said save to note that the victims are the citizens of Georgetown. The quartet is confident that with their propaganda machine in high gear they can fool the public – such as the $500M allegedly spent in Georgetown by the Government – we have asked for a list of these works done by Mr. Whittaker, but only silence. We asked because this money is taxpayers’ money, and we need to follow up these alleged works.

Only in Georgetown could the above take place.

May prayers and good sense lead to change soon to allow citizens to exhale.

Yours faithfully,
Hamilton Green, J.P.
