Barnwell slams ton in DCC win

Christopher Barnwell’s century led hosts Demerara Cricket Club to a comprehensive victory over Everest Cricket Club Sunday in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)/Carib Beer T20 competition.

Barnwell blasted an unbeaten 128 from 56 balls in DCC’s 255-4 from 20 overs to which the visitors replied with 105-9 in 20 overs.

The 27-year-old right handed batsman, smashed 12 sixes and nine fours in his aggressive knock. He started slowly but was severe at the latter part of his innings where he scored more than 60 runs in the 19th and 20th over.

Barnwell was supported by Dennis Squires (31 not out) and Sherfane Rutherford who played a cameo of 38 from 19 balls. Assad and Zaheer Mohamed along with Y. Harrinarine picked up a wicket each for Everest.

In reply the visitors’ batting was stifled by some quality spin bowling from Squires (3-11), Ashmead Nedd (2-21) and Totaram Bishun (2-24). Joseph Perry made 23 while national opener Rajendra Chandrika scored 21.

At Malteenoes Sports Club ground, the hosts defeated Transport Sports Club by eight wickets. Batting first TSC was rattled out for 93 in 17.4 overs as Vishal Narayan (3-11), Cordell Mars 3-25 and Steven Sankar (2-13) the main wicket takers.

Ryan Hemraj (20) was the only batsman to reach 20.

MSC reached 99-2 in reply, with Troy Lewis making 42 and Steven Jacobs 28 not out. Anthony D’Andrade was also unbeaten at the end on 10. Off spinners O. Batson and Kevin Ross claimed a wicket each.
