GCC denied victory by Henry’s last-gasp goal

A goal in the dying minutes by Zene Henry denied Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) a victory when the second round of their inaugural Trinidad and Tobago Outdoor Women’s Hockey League continued Saturday in the Twin Island Republic.

With the score locked at 3-2 in favour of the visitors, Henry would earn Paragon a share of the spoils, denying the Guyanese as she netted with a tap in to level the fixture, after latching onto a rebound following a botched defensive clearance.

The earlier matchup between the two sides in the first round saw the Bourda based squad surrendering a 2-0 lead to eventually go down 5-2 to their opponents.

This showdown would commence in a similar fashion under sweltering heat at the Eastern Sports Complex in Tacarigua as Gabriella Xavier netted in the seventh minute after receiving a Shebiki Baptiste cross. A response would be forthcoming from Paragon as Trinidad and Tobago national captain Allana Lewis scored two minutes onward, reverse striking her effort past custodian Briawna Gordon following a solo run through the heart of the GCC backline.

The home side would then snatch the lead for the first time six minutes prior to the half time interval as Lewis completed her brace. However the equaliser would then come in the form of Kerensa Fernandes two minutes later as the half time period saw the fixture locked at 2-2.

A solo effort by Sonia Jardine would then give the Guyanese the lead in the 42nd minute as she evaded several challenges with her deft skills, before unleashing a powerful effort past the custodian into the roof of the goal.

Nonetheless, Paragon would have the final say in the latter stages as Henry made her presence felt to seal a hard-fought point. The Bourda based outfit will continue their tour today.
