Queen’s College delivers knockout blow to St George’s

Queen’s College (QC) stunned one of the favourites of the 2015 Digicel Secondary Schools Championships, St George’s Secondary School yesterday at the Ministry of Education Sports Complex Ground to advance to the second round of the tournament.

Goals by Kelvin Wills and skipper Shemar Britton helped QC to a comfortable, but historic win over their counterparts at St George’s. Wills opened QC’s account in the 21st minute of the first half while Britton, who is a national table tennis player put in the final goal in the 66th minute to take QC home safely.

Both of the scorers featured in the run-up to the scoring of each goal. The first was due to a classic back-heel pass by Britton outside the 18 yards box to Wills, who dribbled past two defenders, before powerfully kicking the ball past the diving goalie and into the net.

Meanwhile, Wills who played midfield in the first half but was shifted to play on the right-back in the second, collected the ball some 25 yards out on the wing and carried it for six yards before he passed an aerial ball to Britton who was perfectly positioned inside the danger area to tap the ball to the last post for a clinical finish and in so doing, completed the upset.

Known for their dominance on the football field, St George’s looked out of sorts for the first time in the competition which is in its fifth year. Their closest chance of scoring came at the back end of the game, but thanks to QC’s defender Ronaldo Griffith who came on as a substitute five minutes to stoppage time, the ball was intercepted and cleared from the goal.

The winners will now have to face Chase’s Academic Foundation which is considered one of Georgetown’s top teams.
