Slingerz clinched their berth in the League Genesis finale of the GFF Stag Beer Elite League, downing Fruta Conquerors 2-0 in a hard-fought semi-final contest at the Camp Ayanganna ground on Wednesday.
Vurlon Mills and Anthony Abrams separated the two sides with late second half goals in the 81st and 90th+3 minutes respectively. As a result of the win, Slingerz FC will lock horns with Alpha United in the finale on Sunday at the Leonora Sports Facility. Meanwhile, Pele will oppose Fruta Conquerors in the third place fixture.
Following an evenly fought first period witnessed by a large crowd, Mills missed a great chance to give his side the lead in the 57th minute, pulling his effort wide of the lower left corner after a flat right-sided Dwain Jacobs evaded everyone and fell into his path unchallenged.
On the other side, the woodwork denied the Tucville unit from snatching the lead in the 65th minute as a lobbed Dennis Edwards shot from within the left of the box, crashed into the crossbar.
Similarly, Eon Alleyne missed an even better chance in the 72nd minute for Fruta Conquerors, tipping the ball past the onrushing keeper outside the box after racing onto a quick kick from his custodian, only to turn and shoot the effort high over the crossbar from within the left side of the box.
Gideon Payne then had a great chance three minutes onward, directing an unchallenged header from within the centre of the box wide of the left side, following a left-sided cross within the area.
Devon Millington was next to come close for Slingerz FC, firing his effort into the side netting from within the right side of the penalty box in the 77th minute after racing onto a through pass.
The Vergenoegen unit eventually broke the deadlock four minutes onward, finishing down the centre of the net from within the centre of the box, after a low right-sided cross fell fortuitously into his path following a deflection.
Fruta Conquerors was presented with a great opportunity to level the score line in the 90th+3 minute as Jermin Junior upon racing past the final defender, was presented with a one-on-one opportunity on top of the box, only to fire his effort directly at the custodian.
The resulting counterattack led to Slingerz FC sealing the win as Abrams upon racing onto a through pass within the right side of the box, finished past the keeper into the lower left-hand corner.
In the second semi-final, Alpha United defeated Pele by a 3-1 margin.
