Trio charged over theft of ATV

Three men charged with stealing an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) were on Monday granted $100,000 bail each on the charge, but two of the accused remain on remand on additional charges of unlawful gun and ammunition possession.

Yuen Thorne, 28, of Lot 4 Eastville, Annandale, Michael Taylor, 38, of 188 Independence Boulevard and Jason Batson, 27, were accused of stealing an ATV vehicle, worth $3,600,000, on January 4, at Sand Hill, Oko Backdam, Cuyuni River. The vehicle was the property of a Brazilian national, Sonia Guimarvaes.

Thorne, Taylor and Batson all pleaded not guilty to the charge.

While the accused were placed on $100,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on that charge, Thorne and Batson were both read two additional charges.

It was alleged that Thorne, on February 4, at Turtle Creek Backdam, had three .32 rounds of ammunition in his possession without being the holder of a firearm licence.

It was further alleged, that he, on that same day and place, had a .32 Taurus pistol in his possession, also without being the holder of a firearm licence.

Thorne denied both allegations.

As it relates to Batson, the court heard that on February 4, at Turtle Creek Backdam, he had in his possession three .38 rounds of ammunition. It was also alleged that on that same day and place he had a .38 revolver without being the holder of a firearm licence.

Batson pleaded not guilty to both charges read.

The Chief Magistrate ordered that Thorne and Batson be remanded on the gun and ammunition possession charges until their next court appearance.

All the matters were adjourned to February 26, when they will be called at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
