Mason refused bail over jewellery store heist

A 22-year-old mason of Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, charged with robbery under arms at Vickram’s Jewellery was refused bail when he appeared before Magistrate Geeta Chandan at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

It is alleged that on December 4, 2006 Michael Embrack, armed with a gun robbed Vickram Mahadeo of gold and silver jewellery including earrings, bracelets, diamond rings and diamond chain sets, necklaces and pendants all costing $2, 467,400. Embrack and another man reportedly posed as customers, held up Mahadeo and his wife at gunpoint and robbed them of the articles. Mahadeo was bound with tape, but he managed to free himself after the men fled on two bicycles.

He gave chase on another bicycle despite being shot at by the men, who escaped into a canefield. Police launched a manhunt later the same day but were unable to capture the men at the time. Police Prosecutor Sergeant Satrohan Diaram opposed bail on the grounds that a gun was used and the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence.

Embrack indicated to Magistrate Chandan that attorneys-at-law John Persaud and Mursaline Bacchus are representing him.
