Vendor sentenced to community service for alleged theft

A vendor who denied robbing a woman of $22,000, but willingly gave her back a part of the money was on Monday ordered to do three weeks community service in the compound of the Whim Magistrate’s Court. Magistrate Chandra Sohan imposed the duties upon Rafik Khan, 36, called ‘Paps’ of Rose Hall Town after it was alleged that he robbed Shereena Peters of the cash on January 12.

“Sir me nah tek the money but me go pay she back $17,000 and me gon pay de rest Saturday,” the man said.

The magistrate told him that the fact the he was repaying the money proved that he committed the offence. He was expected to start his chores on Monday and continue every day from 8 am to midday.

“The rain is falling now so you would drain the water from the compound,” Magistrate Sohan informed him. Khan was given until February 5 to repay the remainder of the money.
