Indian national gets two years jail for stealing

Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan yesterday sentenced an Indian national who admitted, almost two months ago, to stealing more than $1M from his employer to two years imprisonment when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Vijay Dev, 23, a manager, of 132 Barima Avenue, Bel Air Park, pleaded guilty to the embezzlement charge.

According to the facts of the case, between February and August 2006, at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, being a clerk or servant employed by Harish Baxani, Dev stole $1,100,000 from his store. At court, Dev again pleaded for more time to repay his employer but Baxani said that every time he took Dev back into his employ he continued to steal and he was not prepared to do so again. Dev cried out in court, “Sir, I beg you please, give me a last chance, let him keep my passport and I will work and pay him back.”

After listening to both men the Magistrate reminded Dev that he pleaded guilty to the offence and his employer did not want to take him back into his employ. He then sentenced Dev.
