Sixth escapee reeled in

A sixth Mazaruni Prison escapee, Dhineshwar Sooklall of Wakenaam, was yesterday nabbed by the Joint Services, one week after the jail-break in which he and eight others fled from the high security facility.

A Joint Services press release last evening said that Sooklall was apprehended at an abandoned house at Karau at around 8.15 am. He is serving a sentence for manslaughter. He is presently in police custody.

The capture of Sooklall reduces the number of escapees on the run to three: Kenneth Richardson, Ryan Rambharose and Rudolph Rodrigues. Asrudeen Khan called ‘Rocky’ was nabbed on Wednesday after he stopped a boat captain in the vicinity of Kamayra and requested a drop. After the captain questioned him intensely, Khan admitted that the Police were looking for him.

At a press conference on Saturday, Director of Prisons Dale Erskine said that the escapees had overpowered two guards at the brick prison and made their way out of the gate to the fence where they were spotted by a guard who raised an alarm.

A joint services response team was then activated and within two hours there were between 20 and 30 ranks from the police and prison service on the ground.

As a result of a confrontation that ensued between the prisoners and the joint services, four servicemen were shot and had to be air-dashed to the city for treatment. It was later disclosed that they were injured in a friendly-fire incident.

On Monday afternoon the nine convicts were confronted by members of the joint services while walking along the Karau Trail, Bartica. During the confrontation the men tried to escape as a result of which they were shot at. Trevor McLean called ‘Footprint’, Anil Sanichar, Royston Reid called ‘Knuckles’ and Alvin Shivnarine eventually surrendered and the others fled further into the bush.

Anyone seeing or knowing the whereabouts of the men is asked to make contact with the police on the following numbers: 225-8196, 226-6978, 226-1326, 225-3650, 225-6411, 225-6940, 225-6941, 333-2151, 229-2700, 268-2222, 444-6941, 771-4010, 771-4012, 911 or any Police Station.
