Businessmen have been frightened into compliance

Dear Editor,

I look with dismay as the government through their Revenue boss and his revenue agency (GRA) congratulate businesses for incurring losses everyday as the revenue boss puts it `to keep their customers`. Everyone knows that businesses did not do this voluntarily, it was forced upon them by the GRA by threat of jail and audits.

Those at the GRA are licking their lips as the first month of vat remittances is due. Businesses’ losses this month are the GRA’s gains as the government smiles all the way to the bank. VAT is working thanks to the losing businesses!

The GRA has to be held accountable! Why are the PSC and their affiliates mum on this injustice and others such as the consumption taxes of 30% that are still being charged at customs where documents(entry) were lodged in 2006 and for whatever reasons you are now paying to remove those goods from the wharf in 2007.

The GRA has reduced the PSC and all the various chambers of commerce to toothless poodles which seem resigned to their fate, here again the threat of audits is effective.

Where are we heading when the government try to victimise selected media and majority businesses.

Yours faithfully,
